River Rhine and the Rhine Falls

The River Rhine is one of the longest and biggest rivers in Europe. The river crosses Europe from southeast Switzerland to the northwest of the Netherland. It’s a very important river for Germany. In other words, the Rhine is one of the most used waterways in the world. The Rhine is the biggest river in Germany and very important for the economy and for tourism.

Actually, the Rhine has two sources. The first source, the Hinterrhine locates in canton Graubuenden in the eastern Alps of Switzerland. The second source, the Vorderrhine locates west in the Swiss Central Alps. However, the confluence of Hinterrhein and Vorderrhein is near Chur.

The River Rhine was once the natural northbound border between the Roman Empire and Germania. From here on, the Roman expansion had ceased.

After Chur, the Rhine forms the border to Lichtenstein and Austria until he flows into the Bodensee. River Rhine is crossing the Bodensee from east to west. The Bodensee, in English named Lake Constance, is a lake in the south of Germany. During the ice age, the Rhine Glacier shaped Lake Constance.

The Rhine River flows from Switzerland into the Bodensee and crosses the lake from east to west. After the lake, the river still belongs to Switzerland and is called High Rhine. Then, westbound, follow the spectacular Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen. The Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen is the largest waterfall in Europe and a nice attraction. It is an amazing view from the sightseeing platforms down to the foaming and roaring water. Or a boat ride in the seething water gives an unforgettable trip.

Later on, the Rhine flows to Germany northwest bound. However, wine yards and vineries shaping the upcoming wonderful Rhine valley. After more than 1000 km the Rhine finally flows into the North Sea.
